1L of a Ride: A Well-Traveled Professor’s Roadmap to Success in the First Year of Law School

I ordered this book for my daughter who is an Attorney. Lori studied under Professor McClurg in her first year of Law School and really enjoyed(and learned a lot in)his class. I really bought the book for her as a keepsake. She called me the other day to tell me that she had been reading the book. She said she wished it had been written BEFORE she went to Law School. It is full of valuable information for a first year student that most 1L’s have to learn the hard way (while being graded). She highly recommended it as a “must read” to a member of the family who is starting Law School in the fall.

If you look up “tour de force” in a dictionary, the definition will describe an “exceptional achievement” or a “particularly adroit maneuver or technique in a difficult situation” or a “feat requiring strength, determination, skill, and ingenuity.”
Successfully going through law school – particularly the first year of law school – is all those things. I know. Once upon a time, I was a stressed out law student. And for the last three decades, I have been a law professor – stressing out students.
This book is a tour de force of wise counsel and sound advice.
It covers every aspect of the first year. It is written by a professor with broad experience who has taught thousands of students at six different law schools (including the one I teach at now). Professor McClurg obviously cares about his students deeply and it is no surprise that he has won numerous teaching awards. He also includes very effective self-teaching materials he gathered from actual law students. He interviewed experts on first year legal research and writing courses. Besides his own experience and the experiences of his students, McClurg brings to bear educational research and social science studies on how law students best learn.
If you want to do more than survive – if you want to thrive – in law school, buy this book and follow Professor McClurg’s advice.

The transition into law school (from wherever a person is in life) is insanely difficult. This book eased my mind during the terrible weeks before the beginning of my first semester.
Professor McClurg offers invaluable advice about dozens of aspects of law school. His practical tips (on studying; prepping for exams; keeping organized; and other topics) got me ready for the first weeks of school. On the first day I knew where I wanted to sit; I had my binders ready; I knew how I was going to take notes; and I had a sense of what was necessary information to include in my notes. His advice on making the most of the time between classes is right on, and his other tips about efficient studying should be required reading for all 1Ls. McClurg also gives advice about taking essential breaks from studying and law school activities. The book is immensely readable and lacks the stuffiness of other prep books I tried to read. I simply can’t recommend this book enough.
If you only buy one book in order to prepare for law school, make it this one.

I read this book at the end of my 1L year, and was amazed at how thorough and dead-on accurate it is. It’s fun to read, addresses nearly every aspect of your 1L year, and offers clear, practical advice. I read other Law School Prep Books before starting school, and this one beats them all, hands down. I only wish it had been available at the beginning of my 1L year.
Whether you’re just considering law school or have already started your first year, do yourself a favor and buy this book!
